When gardening in a culvert pipe, it is necessary to replace the soil every few years. Guess what? This was the year! Oh wait, I think I already mentioned that….
Anywho, I was able to get the first two rows of the garden emptied before the kiddos woke up Friday morning. Impressive, I know… wink wink. It’s all thanks to Jillian Michaels.
I simply removed the end caps, then broke the old dirt into clumps. After which, I pushed them to the end of the row and into the waiting wheel barrow.
Bubba and Sugar Belle woke up first and after finishing their list and eating breakfast, they decided they wanted to help me finish up in the garden.
Aren’t they sweet????
While I was working on the third row, I heard a very sleepy voice saying “Good morning Mama…”
Ahhh…finally.
While all the dirt was removed from the garden rows, I decided to make a few repairs and one improvement to the culverts. The end caps of the garden had started coming loose. So, I repaired all of those back to working order. I also decided to dismantle the 4th and smallest culvert garden.
As for improvements…I have had a struggle with water building up in the ripples in the culvert pipe…see?
Ewww…I frequently find lots of tadpoles in here….
So, Mr. OverKill and I decided that we should drill holes in the bottom of the culvert pipe, all the way through the bottom of the pipe.
The kiddos enjoyed watching the geysers as I drilled each hole. Hey, application of geography vocabulary! Woo hoo!
Saturday evening Mr. OK and I filled the gardens back up with fresh dirt. Today, I finished them off with some lime and fertilizer….and SEEDS!
YEAH! The garden is in, and I am so excited. I planted several of the seeds I saved from last years broccoli. I am anxious to see if they will grow successfully.
How’s your garden “growing?” ;)
