First, let me say that photographing a wall that is entirely white…not so easy!
A couple weeks ago, my dad called to say he was doing a demo job and the office had a 12 foot whiteboard in it. He wanted to know if I wanted half of it, and my Stubborn Nefew’s Mother, would take the other half. Of course I jumped on that offer. White boards are expensive!!!
After noodling on where I would put said white board, I settled on the wall near my desk in the schoolroom. It’s the most visible place for the kiddos to see from the school table.
Man, I was so excited!!!!
Then, he called to say that when they attempted to take the board down, it broke. The owners had used liquid nails to hang it on the wall! Weird, I thought. Then, curiosity got the better of me and googled it. Imagine my surprise when I learned that you can by a product at your local big box home improvement store, that is identical to white board, at a fraction of the cost!!!
So, the next time I had Mr. OverKill to myself, we took his truck to our big box store and bought a piece of tile board. I want to say it was $12.00 for the sheet. A few days later, Mr. OK trimmed it to fit the wall, and installed it for me. We chose to use double sided carpet tape to keep the center of the board flush to the wall. Then, we simply used white finishing nails around the edges, followed by trim. He even cutout the place for the light switch and remounted the switches so they are flush again. I know that was a pain for him (Thanks honey!)
A hint about the double sided carpet tape, adhere it to the wall before you start hanging the whiteboard. It was much harder to adhere it to the whiteboard, then the wall. Just sayin’.
I am so thrilled with how this project turned out, and have been kicking myself that I waited so long to find a better white board solution for our school room. I’ve been using a laminated poster, taped to foam board, balanced on my roll around chair. Yeah, I’d say this is a superior solution!
We have a special place for the dry erase markers, and everyone has been educated on not using permanent markers on the whiteboard. Not sure if my trick for removing permanent marker will apply to a whiteboard, and I’m in no rush to find out ;)
