Sorry, I’m just in one of those moods…I am fluctuating between being excited about the Christmas, and totally bummed. Mr. OverKill is not all about Christmas. He holds the opinion that it is more commercialism than anything, and has a tendency to be more “Scrooge-like” at this time of the year. Although, I will say it is better now that we have children. And in his defense, he will do almost anything we (the kiddos and I) want to do, as far as Christmas activities go.
That being said, I think his “Scroogedness” has rubbed off on me. Last year I didn’t feel like doing anything for Christmas, I didn’t even want to bake my traditional goodie baskets. I finally did though, and we had a great Christmas. I know it will happen that way this year too, but the older I get, the harder it is to find wonder in this season. It has nothing to do with “not believing in Santa”, or “knowing the true meaning of Christmas”. It has to do with watching helplessly as dear friend’s lives fall apart. So, I am trying very hard this morning to find the place where I can set my sadness aside and create a special time for my kiddos.
Ok, so what are we going to do special for Christmas? First, I want to share how much I enjoyed our church service yesterday. On the 5th Sunday at our church, we have our regular worship time and then the message from the Pastor, and then we have a second set of worship music. I LOVE 5th Sunday! So, yesterday we sang a wonderful mixture of worship songs and hymns all about giving thanks. Then, pastor challenged us with a message about who Christ is, not a baby in the manger, but the Lord of Lords. Our second set of worship was all Christmas music. What a beautiful transition!!!
Back to what we are doing (sorry for jumping around so much today!). We school year-round so we have our schedule set to take off the entire month of December. But I find the kiddos get too restless, so I usually do a special Christmas unit as school for the kiddos. There are some great resources and Lapbooks out there for Christmas. This year, I am hoping to read through the Kitt Kittredge Christmas book with Sugar Belle. I found a lapbook that goes with this book at CurrClick’s Black Friday Sale, so I am hoping to work through that with her (and maybe Bubba:). I am also hoping to go through and study the hidden meaning behind the 12 Days of Christmas. Perhaps tomorrow I can post more about that. Right now, I need to get going, Sugar Belle isn’t feeling well.
