My kiddos (the boys in particular) have really gotten into Legos recently. We had a few bits and pieces here and there, but not a real “collection”. The boys had recieved a couple of kits, which may I say are the biggest waste of money? They lose the pieces and then they can’t make the exact thing, so they just turn into “regular” Legos, which is fine, but you end up paying so much more for the kit. Ok, off that soapbox for now. So, the boys were really wanting to get some more Legos. So, I went down to Wally World and got them a box.
Looks good right, sounds great….
LEGO Ultimate Building Set:
- 405 colorful classic pieces
- Storage box
- LEGO minifigure
- Baseplate
- Wheels
- Special house elements
- Building instructions
Hmm, the Legos in this box barely covered the bottom of the box! I know 405 pieces sounds like a lot, but with Legos, it’s really not all that much. I was totally disheartened. That dinky little box was 25 bucks!
So, I had a thought, I wonder if I could get some through our local Freecycle group. If you have never heard about this movement, let me enlightent you. From their website www.freecycle.org..
The Freecycle Network™ is made up of 4,619 groups with 5,984,000 members across the globe. It’s a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It’s all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. Each local group is moderated by a local volunteer (them’s good people).
At their website you can search to see if there is a group in your area. So, I posted a message to our group’s thread about wanting some Legos, just to see if anyone had some they were not playing with anymore. The response? Check it out…
Between two families generosity, this is now our Lego Collection. One batch even came with the rolling drawers! (Yes it’s leaning a little. Kids use it, what do you expect!) Bubba was estatic when he went through them and found most of the Star Wars characters! The only problem now is that the Legos are taking over!
See this, it used to be my sewing table. You can still see my beloved sewing machine there, but I can tell you right now, there will have to be a major clean up before I can sew anything!
This is Bubba’s “stash”. He had a whole city thing going on, but right now it looks like a bomb went off in his city.
He also found this boat that he has been working on getting put together. Sadly he has been unable to find the last piece. Shucks!
This is Sugarbelle’s castle. Hmm, her stash is much neater than his….that’s odd.
I really like having the Legos around, they are almost as good for occupying the children as sending them outside:) We may need to work out something better for the stashes though. Christmas is coming and I need to get busy with my sewing machine….
