I have been looking for directions for a Sleeping Bag that will fit an American Girl Doll. After Googling several search terms, I didn’ really find what I was looking for, so of course I just decided to wing it. Here’s what I did…
I had enough of this pre-quilted material to make 2 sleeping bags. I like the look it gave it, more realistic, and hey we want the doll to be comfy right? I think that fleece would also work well, but this is what I had in the scrap box.
In a very technical way, I measured the width of the sleeping bag….with the doll :)
But, for your sake, here are the measurements I used, 21 inches by 17 inches.
Then, I decided I didn’t like the material on the inside, and wanted something a little more girly, so I cut some more scraps I had to match the quilted piece…
(Look familiar Bekah???)
Next, place right sides together…
And stitch….
I started in the middle of one of the long sides, see? I did that so I could just sew all the way around from that point, leaving about a 4 inch gap open, in order to turn the material. Placing the opening there on the side, will save me an extra seam in a minute.
See?
At this point it is very important to stop and iron the sleeping bag, so that the next seam will come out correctly.
So, here we are so far… fold the sleeping bag in half, like so…
Next, we are going to place a piece of ribbon about 35 inches long and pin it at the bottom of the sleeping bag in the middle, in between the 2 layers.
Let me pause here to say that I am not very technical on these kind of things. I mean come on, it’s a sleeping bag…..for a doll. It doesn’t need to be perfect!
So, then you stitch starting a few inches from the top of the sleeping bag, on the side with the opening and continue around to the folded edge.
Voila! A sleeping bag!
I hope that these directions will help someone, and if they are unclear, let me know in the comment section and I will attempted to clarify.
BTW, Bubba just asked me to make one for his puppy :)
Wanda has been trying to make one of these for Brooke she bought a pattern and everything. Hers is supposed to have a zipper…………its a doll! Your way seems much easier.
yeah its just a doll
I have been looking for a pattern for this for 3 solid days. thanks so much, just what I was looking for.
So glad it was helpful!!! My girls still have theirs.
