Last week, it froze again in Florida. This weather has been ridiculous. Anyhow, I decided to go ahead and harvest most of my greens, and freeze them, before the weather froze them for me!
So, this is the mound of greens I needed to wash, blanch, and package.
What a mess of greens!
Sorry.
So, I was despairing at the thought of having to wash all these greens. What a huge job! Then, two of my brain cells started to talking to each other. One reminded the other of hearing someone say that you could wash greens in the washing machine. One Google search later, and I discovered that you can in fact wash greens in the washer. However, all the articles were referring to a top loading washer….hmmm
So, I decided to experiment. Along with my trusty helper, I loaded a pillow case up with some greens. Leaving enough space for the greens to move around a bit and not be smooshed.
Next, I tied the top of the pillow case off with a rubber band(yes I know it’s really a hair tie!).
Next, I threw them in the washer on the delicate cycle and turned off the spin feature. (Side note, please make sure your washer is clean. You might even want to run a cycle just to rinse it out if you think you have any soap residue hanging around.)
34 minutes later, I was looking at some beautiful clean greens.
The next time around, I used a king sized pillow case and was able to get LOTS in one load.
Even thought I had to wait 30 minutes per load, it was worth it, because while they were getting cleaned, I was able to do other things. Mutli-tasking, gotta love it!
You are truly amazing!! Who would have thought?????
