I was thinking about salt the other day. Specifically about what the Bible says about salt…
You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.
Matthew 5:13
We (Christians) are the salt of the earth. So, then I started thinking about all the things salt is good for, and wondered if there was a Spiritual parallel. Here is the list I came up with along with my thoughts on a Spiritual parallel:
flavor – are we the spice of life? Salt (in the right proportions) makes things taste better (NOT bitter).
preserving – are we preserving others for the Kingdom of Christ???
cleaning – does our “salt” clean up the stains in life – as love covers a multitude of sins??
scouring agent – that reminds me of hard work. Are we hard working?
weed killer – are we killing the things that would choke us off from a relationship with God?
soothing bee stings – Do our words soothe the stings in life?
flea repellent – Are we the irritant to others (fleas) or the thing that makes the irritants run away?
eliminates grease fires – Uh-huh, put out those fires!!!
speed up the healing of wounds – Are we quick to make amends, even if it stings at first, or do we let hurt feelings fester?
relaxing muscles and drawing out toxins – Do we provide a place in our homes to help others relax and remove the toxins of the world?
Ok, I’ll stop, but that’s the short list.
We also need to keep in mind that salt was a precious commodity in Biblical times. From what I can see, Spiritual salt is a precious commidty in our day! These qualities are rare! In our human nature, we would rather stoke the fire, than put it out. We would rather add a stinging comment than speak soothing words. We would rather walk the path of least resistance, than work hard. We would rather fertilize those weeds that crowd in and choke out our relationship with the Creator. We would rather let the wound of hurt feelings fester and get infected until we have to cut off the relationship. And sadly our homes are not safe havens of relaxation, but sometimes are places to be avoided at all cost.
By the grace of God we (Christians) are called the Salt of the Earth. Are we (including me) living up to that esteemed title?
excellent word—you are spiritually mature—–It shows in what you write—-I appreciate getting to know you in this way. Blessings on your day!!!!
