Last year our family motto, was “Do hard things.” Yes, I know we kind of ripped it off of these guys and their book. ;) It has been a good mentality for our family. The kids would be working on something and say, “It’s hard!” and we would say, “Great! Do hard things!”
Today, as I watched Tootle Bug rehearse her violin recital piece it occurred to me that sometimes the “hard thing” that I get to do, is to watch my kids struggle through “hard things.” Today at her rehearsal, I really wanted to jump up and say, “Hold it! Just stop! Let’s give her a second!” But I knew I couldn’t. I knew she simply needed to, “Do hard things.”
It’s hard to sit back and watch your child struggle. Sometimes it takes all my restraint not to jump in and help them. But, even though they are young yet, I can see the fruit of their labors. I can see the results of doing “hard things” in their lives, and it good.
So, my challenge to you is to encourage your young people to “Do hard things,” then do something “hard” yourself, and let them.
