Who me? It cracks me up when people refer to me as this. Not exactly how I would refer to myself. I’m more like…..A frazzled mama. Sorry…. Anyway, I was thinking about this because one of my close friends was laughing at me a couple of weeks ago when we were at a garage sale together. I picked up a pair of antique canning tongs, and was so excited to find them, because said friend is a Mason Jar freak.
However, my excitement was in vain because she only collects mason jars, not actually uses them for, oh…I don’t know…..canning! So, at this point she turns to her mother-in-law, who was with us and says, “Tell her how I described her the first time we met.” Her very wise MIL said “I’m not telling her”. She finally caved and it was the dreaded “Suzie Homemaker”. Now, honestly this is only the second time in my life I have been given this name. The first time was from a friend of mine’s husband. I got the feeling that he totally disapproved of my homemaking occupation. He always said it with this borderline condescending tone….Hmmm… that’s OK, he was otherwise a nice guy. So I wondered what exactly is a “Suzie Homemaker”…Webster’s New Millennium Dictionary gave this definition: a housewife who manages a household, esp. with enthusiasm; also, the stereotype of any woman who chooses a traditional female role.
Oops, I guess maybe that does describe me. I thought for sure it would say something about a dress and pearls wearing, daily baking, sparkling house, perfect kids, problem solving, husband-dotting lady.
