I’ve mentioned once or twice before on my blog that I have been learning American Sign Language(ASL). I took 2 classes forever ago now, but I had been attempting to keep up with it. That is, until my health took a nose dive. Well, this year I have decided I want each of the kiddos to start learning a second language. The theory being that it will be easier for them to start now, while they are young.
Well, wouldn’t you know it, the littles chose ASL, and Bubba chose Spanish. Well….for Bubba we were able to borrow my parent’s copy of Rosetta Stone, easy enough. For the littles, I guess I am in charge of that one.
Well today I ran into our deaf friend at the grocery store, where he works. Don’t you know I must have been having a really hard day! I had to stop and really think about what I wanted to sign! You know what they say, use it or lose it. I guess I need to start using it more and more!!! I felt really bad as I put myself in his shoes. Unless his wife is at work, he really doesn’t have anyone to communicate with all day long (with the except of the handful of us who sign coming in). He seemed disappointed that I wasn’t up to chatting.
My favorite sign sums me up for today…it is the sign for empty
I like to use that sign across my forehead which means, empty head!!!
PS, if you are interested in teaching your kiddos ASL, I highly recommend a DVD series called “Signing Time.” Sometimes, you can find them at your local library.
