As I was making bread yesterday I was struck again at how much I really love my new kitchen. One feature in particular that I love are my wheat berry bins. Even though we were remodeling the kitchen on a VERY limited budget, I tried to make some changes to the insides of the cabinets that made the things I needed to store a better fit. For example, I had nowhere to store my cookie sheets. So, I definitely wanted to change that. The other big thing on my list was to find a way to have my buckets of wheat berries in the kitchen without them being seen. I remedied the cookie sheet situation by popping out the shelves on the 2 small cabinets that are on either side of my dishwasher, which created the perfect space for my cookie sheets, cutting boards and baking pans.
Problem solved. Oh and by the way, stainless steel dishwashers are a pain to keep clean!
The wheat berry buckets required a bit more brain power. The wheat I buy comes in 45 lb buckets. They are a bit taller than a regular 5 gallon bucket, and they are not at all attractive.
No matter where I kept them, in the kitchen in the corner, in the utility room, they were an eyesore and a pain to use. So, I had an idea that I thought we could manage working with one cabinet that was kind of useless. I asked Mr. Overkill if we could add full extension sliding drawer hardware to the bottom of a piece of wood and then bolt two smaller sealing buckets to the wood, which would give me slide out wheat berry storage, right where I make bread! It works beautifully and I would say it is definitely one of my favorite things about my kitchen.
Wheat berries are so beautiful, don’t you think????
the only thing that seems to work (I’m using S/S apps that are tens years used) is Cameo. This sulphur powder I found at WalMart for under a buck. Follow directions to the T and use a nice microfiber to dry immediately.
